Chris and I would like to express our gratitude to everyone at the Overnewton Castle for making our wedding such a memorable occasion. From our first meeting with our Wedding Coordinator, Emma, we immediately realised we were in very good hands and her advice and expertise was invaluable in making all the arrangements and guiding us in our planning. The garden was a perfect location to hold the ceremony and overlooked an amazing view. The chef and team produced the most wonderful food for the wedding breakfast and tailored the menu as required; nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The ability to offer a choice for all courses was a real bonus and was much appreciated by our guests and with individual menus and an experienced waiting team the service delivery was faultless. We received somany lovely comments from our guests about how good the day was, the hotel and location, the food, the team that looked after us and the beautiful gardens – which were a perfect background for our photographs. The team at OvernewtonCastle exceeded our expectation and were extremely customer focused and dideverything possible to make the day a success. The combination of this and a great property and location will ensure any special occasion becomes a memorable event for all the right reasons and with people like Emma available, we would not hesitate to recommend the Overnewton Castle for a wonderful and stress free wedding. – December 2012

The Australian bridal market is one of the most demanding of industries as it requires wedding suppliers a one off opportunity to deliver excellence the first time, every time, there are no second chances. Repeating this outcome bride after bride after bride is a daunting task for which thousands of wedding suppliers strive to achieve. It is all the more daunting when the entity who determines this outcome are newlyweds who have been through the process of selecting and engaging wedding suppliers who have demonstrated their ability to design the ingredients which culminate in the delivery of the perfect day. Overnewton Castle Receptions is one such company who has consistently delivered these dreams to their brides.

Yesterday we attended the high tea. I have lived in Keilor for 16 years and my children went to Overnewton College so I was aware of Overnewton Castle but I have never been on the grounds. I brought a few friends with me from Geelong and all of us were so amazed that a place so beautiful and serene was sitting there so close to suburbia. We had such a wonderful time and will definitely be coming back. I slept for an hour when I got home because I was so full. Keep up the good work and I will definitely be spreading the word. – Mad Hatters Tea Party 6th Novmeber 2011 – Lynden

The Main Dining Room was built.

Overnewton castle was built by William Taylor in 1849. The Scotsman bought 13,000 acres of rich grazing land just west of the Keilor township. Taylor built a simple single story bluestone colonial style homestead. This consisted of 6 rooms with large shuttered windows and wide verandahs. The homestead was positioned on a gentle slope overlooking Keilor and afforded extensive views of the surrounding countryside.

During the 1850’s Keilor became an important and busy stopover for travelers on their way to the Victorian Goldfields. This included the building of 2 schools, a new bridge and a new hotel.

It was not until William Taylor returned from a trip to Scotland in 1859 that the grandeure of his dreams became apparent. He set about turning the functional colonial homestead into a miniature Scottish Baronial Castle. The Stately two- storyied wing was added, along with the blue stone Dairy & Butcher Shop and the Private Billiard room now used as a chapel for wedding ceremonies.

Overnewton is built in the Victorian Tudor style, inspired by 16th century English & Scottish architecture. The Scottish baronial style is characterised by its rough textured masonary, steeped pitched roofs and overhanging battlement corner turrets. The candle snuffer roofs show the influence of the French architecture. The bluestone walls were quarried on the estate and rendered with a yellow gravel and stucco finish. Above the large windows of the master bedroom is the Taylor family crest – a mailed arm and fist enclosing a dagger and the motto “Semper Fidelis” (always faithful) and above several other windows are the carved initals of HT, T 1859 and WT.

After the completion of this wing the homestead consisted of over 35 rooms including 7 bedrooms (the master room included a small circular room and a dressing room) schoolroom, library, drawing room, 2 kitchens, 5 servants rooms and the Billiard room. There are still many original features such as tiles in the bathrooms, claw foot bath and the old IXL wood stove in the kitchen. Several out buildings on the estate include a bluestone butchery and dairy, lamp room, bootroom, coachhouse, stables, woolshed, shearing sheds and machine shed.

William Taylor passed away in 1903 aged 85 and six months latter is wife Helen aged 71 passed away. Their eldest son William Henry continued to manage the estate untill he passed away in 1939 aged 81 and his wife Beatrice in 1948. The estate remaind in the Taylor family untill 1959.

The Carr Family purchased Overnewton in 1959. They raised their three children on the property using part of it as a family home and the downstairs rooms were used as a wedding reception centre.

In 1975 Dr. L. J. Norton purchased Overnewton Estate to raise his own family on the property. Since then there has been many upgrades and changes to the property including mains water in 1976, a fire in 1980 burnt the old timber stables. Dr Norton purchased back 6 acres of land which included a dry stone wall and some of the original outbuildings.

The years have been kind to Overnewton, today it remains much then same as when it was originaly built. Hidden away amongst the old trees, it has seen many changes throughout the years. Gone are the days of horse and carriages, gas light and servants, but the old world grace and charm along with the elegance, grandeur and atmosphere of a bygone era still remain. Having been restored over the years and an elegant dining room added to the estate this is definatley a hidden treasure.

Garden

Overnewton Castle Garden

The garden is maintained to give year round interest, and to create a historic feel that sits comfortably with the buildings.

It is presumed that the large Quercus robur (English Oak tree) and Ulmus procera (Elm trees) on the North side of the house were planted when the buildings were began in the 1850s, as was the Pinus Halepensis (Aleppo pine or Lone pine) on the Victoria mound garden and the Cupressus macrocarpa (Monterey Pine), Cupressus sempervirens and Cupressus torulosa to the East. To the far North are Olea europaea (Olive trees) a very old Ceratonia siliqua (Carob tree), Syncarpia glomulifera (Turpentine from N.S.W.).  While near the front gate is an Agathis robusta (Qld kauri), Araucaria bidwillii  (Bunya bunya Pine), Araucaria cunninghamii (Hoop Pine), Eucalyptus cladocalyx  (Sugar gums) and other gums trees.  More recent tree plantings have been of Fraxinus (Ash), Pyrus calleryana (Flowering pear) and various fruit trees. A Euonymus japonicus has been planted in a WW2 mine on the front lawn.

The garden beds are planted with shrubs, annuals, perennials, bulbs and roses to provide year round colour and fragrance.  Many of the roses were bred by Alister Clark, a family friend who lived at Glenera, Bulla.  The Victorian mound has been restored with plants that tolerate dry shade under the Lone pine.  Behind the Guest Cottage local indigenous plants have been used.

The White Wrought Iron Gazebo was shipped over from Scotland in 1882 and is an ideal spot to sit and view the house.

Tanks, with a capacity of 195KL have been installed and capture all the roof water to be used for watering the garden.  The garden beds are covered with mulch (pea straw) during the warmer months to preserve moisture and protect the soil.  Organic gardening principles are followed to protect birds, especially the many Blue Wrens, lizards and other native animals that share the garden.
